Toppings
Nowadays, most people have some type of dental filling. These can be virtually invisible if crafted carefully with modern materials like composites. Over the past few years, these materials have significantly improved and offer long-lasting durability, making them fully comparable to the older amalgam material.
Sustainable solution
Fillings are a permanent and effective solution for treating tooth decay or damaged teeth. High-quality fillings last for many years, allowing normal chewing and preserving natural teeth.
Aesthetic appearance
With modern materials, it's possible to achieve an aesthetically pleasing look, as the filling matches the color of natural teeth. This ensures that the filling is virtually unnoticeable, which is important for the aesthetic appearance of your smile.
Pain-free experience
The procedure for placing a filling is done under local anesthesia, ensuring a pain-free experience for patients. The dentist takes care of your comfort during the procedure, contributing to a positive experience and trust in the service.
The process of making a filling
Making a filling usually takes 45 to 60 minutes. First, the dentist removes all tooth decay and/or old, worn-out fillings. Then, the surface of the tooth is prepared with a special liquid to allow the material to adhere.
Layering process
The composite material is applied to the tooth in multiple layers and is gradually hardened using blue light. After applying the material, the filling is adjusted to your bite and polished to be as smooth and shiny as your natural teeth.

Diagnosis and tooth preparation
The procedure starts with a thorough diagnosis where the dentist examines and assesses the condition of the tooth, determining the extent of the decay or damage. If necessary, an X-ray is taken to gain better insight into the condition of the dental tissue. Based on the diagnosis, a treatment plan is then prepared.
Removal of damaged tissue
The next step is to remove the damaged or decayed tissue from the tooth. The dentist carefully cleans the affected area and removes all infected tissue. This is an important step as it ensures a healthy and solid foundation for placing the filling.
Pleacing the filling
After preparing the tooth, the dentist places the filling in the correct position. High-quality materials, such as composite materials that match the tone of natural teeth, are used. The filling is carefully shaped to fit the natural form of the tooth, ensuring an aesthetic appearance. Finally, the filling is adjusted to achieve optimal bite and comfort when chewing.

Answers to frequently asked questions
Do you use amalgam?
For many people, amalgam is no longer acceptable, mainly due to its gray color, which is very noticeable in a broad smile. In our offices, we no longer use amalgam and have replaced it with composite/white material, which is equally durable, color-matching, and requires minimal removal of tooth structure.
Can you replace old amalgam fillings with white ones?
At your request, we can also replace your old amalgam fillings with composite/white ones. If the old and worn-out fillings are larger, we recommend replacing them with inlays or onlays. These provide additional stabilization and longer-lasting protection for weakened teeth compared to composite or amalgam fillings.
This also offers a better aesthetic appearance as it is made in a dental laboratory. However, larger dental restorations can also be done directly with composites (direct onlays), which requires more time than a regular smaller filling.
Is the procedure for placing filling painful?
The process of placing fillings is carried out under local anaesthesia, which makes for a pain-free experience. Patients usually do not feel discomfort or pain during the procedure.
What is the difference between amalgam and composite (white) fillings?
Amalgam fillings are made of a metal alloy and are silver in colour. Composite fillings are made from natural materials and are adaptable to the colour of your teeth, making them aesthetically appealing.
How long does it take to make a filling?
The time it takes to make a filling depends on the extent of the tooth decay. It usually takes from 30 minutes to one hour.
How long will the filling last?
Quality-made fillings can last for many years, depending on your oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist for check-ups and maintenance.
Can you eat immediately after a filling is placed?
After placing the filling, it is advisable to wait a few hours before eating to allow the filling material to harden completely. The dentist will provide precise instructions regarding eating after the procedure.
Do composite (white) fillings stain?
Composite fillings are made from aesthetic materials that are usually more resistant to staining than traditional amalgam fillings. However, it is advisable to avoid drinking highly colored beverages (coffee, tea, red wine) and smoking to maintain the aesthetic appearance of the filling. Regular dental visits for cleaning can also help keep the filling bright and attractive.
Is sensitivity after getting white fillings more common than with amalgam?
Sensitivity is more common after placing white fillings because the procedure is more delicate, and the tooth surface is etched before bonding the filling. The tingling and sensitivity are temporary and usually subside within a few months.
